Temple Emanu-El, Marblehead MA
Bat Mitzvah / Bar Mitzvah

Temple Emanu-El from
Photographer’s point of view:

General experience

We’ve worked here a dozen times and never had any sort of unpleasant experience.

Staff

Extremely cooperative Rabbi Jenn Mangold (and before that, Rabbi David J. Meyer) is always ready to help; she is also totally aware of the importance of photography and knows how to pose, etc. Other staff are also always nice, understanding, and helpful.

Planning tips

Since I live less than 10 minutes from the temple, I am always ready to meet with family before the Big Day to discuss all possible details. On the day of the ceremony, the Temple allows family and photographer to come beforehand and do all formal pictures with Torah, the Rabbi, etc. Usually, we have enough time to do all group formal shots in the hall or outside, as well as a short solo session for the Bat Mitzvah girl or Bar Mitzvah boy.

At this temple, the photographer is not allowed during the service, so all shots with Torah and the Rabbi should be taken beforehand. Then the photographer has a couple of hours for traveling to the reception venue or can change batteries, backup files from memory cards, etc., if the reception will take place at the temple.

Photo opportunities

Literally limitless. A photographer can work outside (beautiful doors, steps, trees, a lawn in front of the temple, also green area behind the temple with the photogenic tree and colorful bushes), or inside in the hall with enough amount of natural light and space for big groups, and inside of recently fully remodeled sanctuary.

Also, with proper planning, you can always find a few extra minutes and go to Marblehead parks or beaches nearby.

The area surrounding the Temple Emanu-El provides numerous spots for solo or group pictures before Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah

Doors of the Temple Emanu-El can be used for creative photos before Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah

The sanctuary of the Temple Emanu-El provides enough space and natural light for high quality solo and group shots

Rabbi is always ready to smile, know how to pose, and ready to follow photographer’s directions

Green areas in front of the building and behind the temple are also great for solo and group pictures
